Just watched Arnold Schwarzenegger’s appearance on Face The Nation and his Youtube backing of Democrat Manchin as a presidential candidate while urging us to find the “center” in politics. Why do we listen to this steroid simpleton? His political actions were FUBARs two decades ago. They haven’t improved with age.
Very disappointing: a self-made man, an entrepreneur becoming so mamby-pamby. Arnold’s documentary of a young man from an Austrian village leaving his country, and eventually riding the American dream to the pinnacle of entertainment mega star was inspiring. It displayed the determination and focus which delivered us the “Terminator.” He portrayed himself as a political conservative, defying the Hollywood Liberals at every turn. But one seminal event described in the documentary shows the crack in his façade. It was, as California’s Republican Governor, betraying the ladder of conservative success that had been ascended while acquiescing to the socialist spending demands of the Democrats.
Was this a new Arnold, desperately seeking the Kennedy Clan and its Liberal Cult’s embrace? Does his foreign roots demand love of a majority over respect? Is this a Star ego thing? Or is this built into the Austrian nature to capitulate to its larger, more powerful neighbor?
FYI for Arnold: Manchin is only your darling ‘Centrist’ because West Virginia is actually conservative and he has to stretch in that direction to maintain his Senate seat. If he actually voted the Democrat line, the Republicans would win his seat. Unfortunately, I suspect the Republican Senate leadership has cut a not-so-clandestine deal with Manchin: his vote to block over-the-top spending issues in exchange for an unenthusiastic Republican assault for his seat (same reason Sinema went “Independent”). The problem is, even Republican Senators have lost perspective on what qualifies as “over-the-top” spending.
Do you really think Manchin would keep up any pretense of being “centrist” if he became President? He would probably increase our national (disgraceful) debt faster than Old Joe.
True conservatives dislodged Republican party leadership from the East Coast Rockefeller Liberal wing in 1964. It was the Western Goldwater wing, and eventually Reaganites that pulled the party back towards its conservative roots. (However, we lost leadership again when Neo-Cons infiltrated along with Reagan’s welcoming of Evangelists).
In Arnold’s 2004 Republican Convention speech he condemned Democrats as resembling Austrian Socialists. Yet that is what he became as California’s Governor. Being born in California and raised an Orange County Republican, I saw the California of my youth in decay by the time he ran. If I were aware of how he would help the process along, I would not have voted for him even if I were still a resident.
And now, touting someone like Manchin for president is unconscionable. Arnold needs to leave his Republican credentials at the door on the way out.
His rants on international affairs is most troubling. It sounds like a cowering, pre-WWII Austria hoping the bully next door won’t beat it up too badly. You talk about Ukrainian children in bomb shelters, as if they were made victims by their own government standing up to the bully, Russia. Shameful! Arnold should show his unity for the Noble Ukrainian Cause (related and titled article on this site). But Austria praised Germany when that nation annexed Czechoslovakia; and even provided troops for invading Poland. Maybe this is the model he is using for Ukraine.
Listening to his most recent on-line political ramblings, I see how lucky we are that our Founding Fathers disqualified foreign-born’s from running for the Presidency. Arnold might have had a shot at it, unless his bastard child was discovered. I don’t think even the Kennedy’s could have overcome that hurdle.
Arnold needs to either stick with acting or go join the Democrats officially. A sheep in Austrian Socialism is not a conservative. And his videos were complete FUBAR.
